FAQ

What is Functional Neurology?

Functional Neurology leverages neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to reorganize and form new connections in response to learning, experience, or environment—to heal the nervous system and enhance function.

We're able to optimize how the nervous system functions by identifying and improving areas of dysfunction—without relying on surgery or medication. We promote healing and improve quality of life through targeted exercises, sensory stimulation, and lifestyle adjustments.

From sensory issues in kids, to vertigo or POTS, to the post-concussion rehabilitation of elite athletes, functional neurology is an approach that can be tailored to address any part of brain or nervous system function.

Do you treat my condition?

At Knoxville Functional Neurology, we implement a patient-centered approach. Rather than focusing our treatment plan on generic condition or diagnoses, we evaluate your exact presentation.

That being said, the nervous system controls our everyday health and function, so we're able to improve patient outcomes over a huge variety of conditions and symptoms by starting at the source—the brain.

Even when conditions may not seem directly connected to the nervous system, such as GI, immune, or cardiovascular issues, the body is deeply integrated, and every condition is affected by the brain and nervous system. Feel free to shoot us a note using the 'Contact Us' form below!

Do you take insurance?

Knoxville Functional Neurology is a non-participating provider. This means we don't bill insurance directly, but can (upon request) provide superbill receipts that allow you to seek reimbursement from your insurance company on your own. We only accept out-of-pocket payments for care (Cash, check, Venmo, Zelle, or card).

Why? If we adopted an insurance model, the insurance company tries to dictate as much of your care as possible—what 'diagnosis' you need, what 'therapies' we're able to provide, and would require us to raise treatment prices to pay someone who has expertise in insurance billing codes. Instead, we get to keep care accessible, and focus ONLY on tailoring your therapy to your body's needs.

What does it cost?

We believe in full transparency regarding pricing, and it's laid out on our 'Our Services' page.

We're able to keep pricing much lower than other private providers by keeping overhead to a bare minimum (no administrative staff) and spending $0 on marketing or advertising—we're blessed to operate on only word-of-mouth referrals.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed to come to the office.

What are visits like?

For neurology patients, the initial visit will be a full neurological evaluation, with a follow-up visit to go over the findings from the evaluation and talk through a custom, detailed plan of action. The plan will consist mostly of at-home exercises with lifestyle and dietary modifications as needed. In-office therapy improves outcomes and timelines for rehabilitation, but in general, we make sure you're enabled to create change on your own, at home.

For chiropractic patients, the initial visit is 30 minutes, and includes an assessment and treatment. From there, adjustment appointments are typically 15 or 30 minutes.

For functional medicine patients, the initial consult will be 30-60 minutes, and will be a full evaluation of your history, current lifestyle, and goals. From there, we'll plan additional diagnostics (neurological exam, lab panels, etc) and meet for a full walkthrough of your treatment/lifestyle plan together.

Is Dr. Caleb good with kids?

Dr. Caleb is very experienced and extremely patient in working with kids, who make up about 60% of his patient population. The office is set up to facilitate movement, exploration, and play, and is generally one of his smaller patient's favorite places to visit.

Dr. Caleb will treat your child with respect, will make sure they understand how their brain can work and change, and why they're being asked to do their exercises. He will also (kindly and patiently) hold them to a high standard of effort and behavior, letting them know that they're capable of more than they think.

How long will it take to 'fix' me?

The brain is constantly changing. We can leverage neuroplasticity to create a different health outcome in a relatively quick timeframe, sometimes in one visit or day. However, creating the lasting change we're looking for may take longer. Additionally, many conditions have been developing for years and the ‘re-wiring’ process is more difficult.

All that to say, there's no real answer to this question...but if you're willing to put in a consistent effort, you'd be surprised how soon you can start to break those neurological habits.

What kind of Chiropractic care do you offer?

We use a blended approach of hands-on chiropractic and bodywork. Evidence shows that active rehabilitation exercises and interventions can be more effective than just passive modalities, so we incorporate both.

I don't know how I feel about Chiropractic—is that okay?

Totally fine. We have many functional neurology patients that have never received any sort of Chiropractic adjustment, and we never push it. The reality is that adjustments are simply a tool in our tool belts—we use them to stimulate the nervous system and prompt healing, and there are plenty of other ways we can do that.
